Preparations for the *ship 2018 are in full swing and what’s more, we are finally excited to introduce the fresh faces reinforcing our crew! We asked our interns, working in different roles at *ship to talk about their expectations and experiences. Let’s see what they had to say!

Nhu Nguyen

What is your role and responsibilities?
I’m working as the Event Coordinator for *ship Startup Festival. In simple words, my responsibility is to know everything about the *ship and *ship crew, from mentor’s timetable to food delivery and put all the work into nice schedules.

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
I want to build a career in event management, and *ship gives me a just-right offer. The event is relatively young but has shown great potential, and I want to be a part of its growth. Some friends of mine were on board in the previous years, they had a nice experience and has learned a lot from the event so I was motivated to join. Plus I fell in love with this lovely city Kotka.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
Learn how to do event planning and managing, improve teamwork and social skills as well as get along with the team and make friends.

How would you define yourself in three words?
Sarcastic cat person.

How do you like to challenge yourself?
I challenge myself to learn to challenge myself? I don’t challenge myself. I know what I can do and make a plan for it. If I need something I will learn to make it, that’s why I have pretty many hobbies.

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
“Even though the languages are different, the music is the same.”

What are some small things that make your day better?
Coffee, chocolate, EXO.

If you had a ship how would you name it?
Probably will never have a ship, but if I do it would be “Wreck.”

Joel Toivonen

What is your role and responsibilities?
I am a stage manager, my responsibilities are contacting startup companies and organize a pitch captain.

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
I like organizing events.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
To run a great event

How would you define yourself in three words?
Hard worker, happy and social

How do you like to challenge yourself?
By doing a different kind of things

Trang Nguyen

What is your role and responsibilities?
I’m the Program Coordinator of *ship Startup Festival. My main job is to take care of the Mentor Program, making sure both the mentors and startup teams get the best experience possible out of it.

What attracted you to join the *ship team? 
When I first knew about *ship, the slogan “Get shi* done” really caught my attention. It somehow showed the company culture to me. To be able to work with a fun, young, creative, and motivated team is what attracted me to become a *shipster.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
One week into the internship and I already felt like this would be my best summer so far. So fingers crossed that our baby, the festival, will be a huge success!

How would you define yourself in three words?
Organized, smiley and extra

How do you like to challenge yourself?
Recently, I have been trying to challenge myself by doing things that I found uncomfortable every day. And it actually works like magic! You can’t know what opportunities you have missed, or how much you could grow if you just stay in your comfort zone forever.

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
My favorite quote of all time is “dreams don’t work unless you do”. It inspires me to try a bit harder every day to turn dreams into reality.

What are some small things that make your day better?
Any dogs I can pet, which we have 2 at the office! My day is already 150% better to be greeted by the dogs at our office.

If you had a ship how would you name it?
“The I-have-know-idea”

Nina Sivatckaia

What is your role and responsibilities?
I’m a marketing coordinator at *ship startup festival. I’m responsible for presenting the company in the Internet, updating and tracking all the social media accounts and blog posts, working closely with communication coordinator and graphic designer, creating new marketing campaigns and engaging more people to participate in this amazing festival.

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
I always enjoyed being part of a team, organizing an event and creating something that is also interesting for other people. Moreover, I like the idea of *ship startup festival. It gives a great opportunity for young entrepreneurs and start-ups to develop their business and become very successful in their industry. For me, it is very inspiring.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people, getting a valuable experience in marketing and event organization and making *ship Startup Festival 2018 the best event for this summer!

How would you define yourself in three words?
Persistent, open-minded and adventurous.

How do you like to challenge yourself?
I always have a lot of different ideas that I want to implement. I’m trying to work on them, setting up my own deadlines, so there can be some results that can be helpful for me in the future. For example, currently, I’m learning German cause I want to speak it fluently.

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
I don’t have a particular role model but there are people that inspire and motivate me a lot. It is not really a quote but I would like to say “Follow your dreams and do what you really love”.

What are some small things that make your day better?
Riding a bike, eating ice cream, watching the sea and listening to music.

If you had a ship how would you name it?
“Forward”

Mimi Hla

What is your role and responsibilities?
I am working as a Communication coordinator. I will be planning the content of the newsletters and Startup Magazine and publish them on time as well as interview participants, mentors and partners.

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
When I was looking for the internship places, I was drawn to their passion and what they have accomplished through their hard work. I believe joining the *ship team will bring me new experiences to learn.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
To gain new experiences and learn every day something new. I hope to help make this event another great experience for everyone and inspire new people to join in the future.

How would you define yourself in three words?
Adventurous, passionate and cheerful

How do you like to challenge yourself?
I always aim to develop myself and grow as a person by stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things with open-mind.

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
I don’t have any particular person, but I adore people who always live their life at fullest, aim to be different and believes in what they do.

What are some small things that make your day better?
The kindness of strangers, long walks with my dog and making time to talk to friends/family at the end of the day

If you had a ship how would you name it?
“To my Bay, best Bay”

Amanda Liimatainen

What is your role and responsibilities?
I’m the graphic design intern, so I’m in charge of creating our printed and digital graphic materials, plus helping with planning the venue layout.

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
Getting to work in a dynamic, international team and being able to create something tangible together.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
Creating amazing designs for *ship and having a bunch of adventures with the *ship team.

How would you define yourself in three words?
Caring, curious and creative

How do you like to challenge yourself?
I often pick up new hobbies or tasks to master, such as learning a new language or to write with my left hand.

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
This quote is from one of Tove Jansson’s books: “All things are so very uncertain, and that’s exactly what makes me feel reassured.” I’m trying to embrace change, as that accelerates self-growth and it’s vital for a designer to constantly develop oneself.

What are some small things that make your day better?
Listening to a lot of music, I’m always looking for more great songs to listen to. I also like to explore new tea blends.

If you had a ship how would you name it?
“Astrid”

Tapio Auvinen

What is your role and responsibilities?
In *ship, I am the head of photography

What attracted you to join the *ship team?
Finland is full of small cities like Joensuu and Kotka from where people and businesses move out to grow. As I lived my youth in Joensuu and studied in Jyväskylä, I understood it is vital for the cities to keep them young and up going. For that we need to inspire youths and events like *ship.

What are your expectations for this summer and for the *ship Startup Festival 2018?
For the fourth time of *ship Festival I’m not waiting to see products or big investment money (both are great but optional) but joyful teams and much potential for the future.

How would you define yourself in three words?
dedicated, adventurous and beautiful

How do you like to challenge yourself?
I take cold showers

Do you have a role model or a favorite quote that inspires you?
I do take inspiration from many people. At the moment I idolize filmmakers because that is what I want to learn in the next two years. Two years ago I did idolize photographers.

What are some small things that make your day better?
Nailing something for the first time. That’s the best!

If you had a ship how would you name it?
“Orso!” It means bear in Italy. Not sure why. It sounds fun and fluffy.
